If you have visited here lately, you may have noticed the site running very slowly. After checking the server logs, it appears that spammers/hackers are hammering at the server day and night trying to find a way in. There’s nothing I can do about that, as soon as I block one IP address, they just use another.
The only thing I can do is to protect the site as best I can, which I am doing, and delete some of the least-used features to try and speed things up a bit.
There were a lot of features that were just not being used, so I’ve tried to determine the best way to configure the site, while still making it enjoyable and interactive.
These are the places you will see a difference:
- Your profile
- Extended profile
- The member list
- Messaging system
- The front page
You can still message other members, and will receive notifications of any new messages. When you visit the site for the first time, you will notice a popup asking if you want to receive notifications. This is purely for the messaging system and nothing else.
When new members sign up and/or edit their profile, they will now be required to upload an avatar. Most spammers will not take the time to do this, so it may help cut down on the amount of spam signups we receive.
When editing your profile, the password fields do NOT need to be filled in unless you want to change your password.
The member list has been updated, but you can now no longer search by custom fields, but you can search by username, real name and/or email address. I’m still looking at a way to link to each member’s posts from their profile.
I’ve also removed the user following feature as this was not used enough to justify the extra resources.
If you visit the site using a small device, such as a phone, you may not notice much of a difference to the front page of the website. However, when viewed on a PC or larger device such as a tablet, you will notice that you can now view new posts, random posts and tutorials for the Sims 2, Sims 3 and Sims 4 all on the one page, so new posts should be easier to find.
If you have any questions or concerns about any of these changes, please feel to reply below and I’ll do my best to help.
